How to make pumpkin puree from fresh pumpkin

To make a pumpkin puree it’s not hard. You may need a pie pumpkin for the best job. A pie pumpkin is generally a type of pumpkin that is smaller, sweeter, more dense, and less grainy textured than the decorative jack-o-lantern types. They are also called sugar pumpkins or cheese pumpkins, and can be found in the market in later September through December. If you can’t find a pumpkin pie, you may use other types of pumpkin or even butternut squash.

Easy Healthy Recipe: Homemade Pumpkin Puree

Ingredients you will need:

  • Pumpkin
  • Water

There are 3 ways to prepare healthy and fresh pumpkin puree:

By Baking:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Chop the pumpkin in half.
  3. With a spoon, scrape out the seeds and pulp and the stringy fibers from the center of the pumpkin.
  4. Place the pumpkin halves on a baking sheet (cut side down). Bake in the preheated oven for about 1 hour, or until pumpkin is soft and turns light golden brown.
  5. Set cool and remove the pumpkin skin.
  6. Cut the pumpkin into chunks. Blend or food process until smooth.

By Boiling:

  1. Chop the pumpkin in half and remove all the seeds and the stringy fibers.
  2. Cut the pumpkin into chunks and place them in a large pan.
  3. Cover the pumpkin chunks with water and bring to boil. Cook until pumpkin tender.
  4. Drain and cool the pumpkin chunks. Blend or food process until smooth.

By Microwave:

  1. Chop the pumpkin in half and remove all the seeds and the stringy fibers.
  2. Place the pumpkin into a microwave safe bowl. You may need to cut the pumpkin further to make it fit.
  3. Add a couple of inches of water to the bowl, cover, and put it in the microwave.
  4. Cook on high for 15 minutes, then check to see if it is soft. Continue cooking on medium and check every 5 minutes until pumpkin tender.
  5. Cool. Use a spoon to separate the cooked pumpkin out of the skin. Blend or food process until smooth just as in the other methods.

Suggestions and variations:

  1. Store in refrigerator - Place in an air tight container and cover. Store in refrigerator for one week.
  2. Freeze it - Place in an air tight container and cover. Freeze the pumpkin puree for as long as 3 weeks.
