Some seafood, including fish and shellfish contain mercury, especially some large long-live fish. This mercury concentrated in the body of fishes is often in the form of methyl mercury that is toxic to human, and may harm the development of nervous system of an unborn baby and young child. Thus, mercury contamination of seafood can be a serious health issue.

Although there are health risks in consuming mercury, this does not mean that fish and seafood should be avoided completely as they are very good sources to give us the important nutrients include Omega-3 fatty acids. There is no clear advice on how much mercury consumed is considered safe. The bottom line is always try to avoid choosing the fish and seafood that is high in mercury content, such as swordfish, shark, tilefish, king mackerel, and tuna (except canned light tuna).
