History of the Chocolate Chip Cookies

Chocolate chip cookie was originally known as the Toll House Cookie. It was accidentally invented by Ruth Wakefield in the 1930s. Ruth owned the Toll House Inn in Massachusetts. The story goes that one day, when Ruth cooked for her guests, she was on running out of baker's chocolate and had substituted with small chunks of Nestle semi-sweet chocolate in a cookie recipe, thinking that it would melted into the dough as the baker's chocolate. When she took the cookies out from the oven, to her surprised, the semi-sweet chocolate was softened to a delicately creamy texture and thus, the chocolate chip cookie was discovered. These cookies with chocolate chips became increasingly popular over the years. Eventually, the Nestle Company got word of Ruth Wakefield's "invention" and began marketing their chocolate morsels under the name Nestle Toll House Chocolate Chips. Nestle bought the rights to the Toll House name as well as Ruth Wakefield's recipe, calling it "Toll House Cookie."

Easy Healthy Recipe: Healthy Chocolate Chip Cookies

Preparation time: 20 minutes


  • Whole wheat flour - 2 cups
  • Baking soda - 1 tsp
  • Butter - 1 cup
  • Brown sugar - 3/4 cup
  • Vanilla extract - 1 tsp
  • Egg - 1
  • Egg white - 1
  • Semi sweet chocolate chips - 8 oz

Cooking Directions:

  1. Mix whole wheat flour and baking soda in a bowl. Keep it aside.
  2. In another bowl, beat the butter with a hand mixer for about a minute. Then add in brown sugars and blend until the ingredients are well blended.
  3. Add in vanilla extract, egg, and egg white. Mix well.
  4. Reducing the mixer speed, slowly add in the flour mixture into the butter mixture, a little at a time, mix until evenly incorporated.
  5. Stir in the chocolate chips to the dough.
  6. Preheat oven to 375.
  7. Using a rounded tablespoon, shape the cookie dough. Place the cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper (or Silpat).
  8. Bake the cookies in the preheated oven for about 10 minutes until golden brown on the cookies edge.
  9. Let cool, and ready for serve.

Suggestions and Variations:

  • If you find the cookie dough very soft, cover it and refrigerate until firm.
  • Turn the sheet to the other way about half way baking so that the cookies bake evenly.
